WEEk 5

For week five some new things that I learned were how to solve money problems and how to solve time problems using a time line. When I solve these problems what I usually like to do is add up to solve money problems, for example lets say you buy 10.50 worth of groceries and you pay me with a 20.00 I take the total 10.50 and count up +.50=11.00 and then plus 5.00 equals 16.00 and plus four equals 20.00 meaning that you gave her back 9.50 in change.

For time problems it gets tricky becuase some have hours, minutes, and seconds!
How I figured out how to solve time problems I start with a timeline and then I count up the seconds first on the timeline then the minnutes and then hours to get me a total.

Week 4

Hey everyone! :)

So during week 4 what we did was learn all the differant ways to solve addition and subtraction problems. Growing up all I knew how to do was the traditional way of solving problems, so when we were asked to solve the problems in a differant way I struggled becuase my mind was set on only solving them the traditional way. After the second problem though I started to get a hang of using other methods to solve a problem.

Below I will explain some of the differant methods I learned

 Problem #1     34+28

Give and take
34+28=
30+32+62

What you do above is take 2 away and add them to 28 in order to make it into a happy solid number and the 34 then becomes a 32. Then you add both 30 and 32 to get 62.

Partial sums
  34

50=3+4
12=2+8
_______

Partial sums is the method where you break up the tens colomn and the one colomn and you add the tens first, so 3 would be 30 and 4 would be 40 to give you 50. Then you add the ones which are 8 and 2 which give you 12. Finally you add the 50 and 12 to get 62 your final answer.



Finally above is a video explaining the partial differances method which is used to solve three digit problems. This is one of the other methods that I learned during class to solve subtraction problems.

week 3

During week 3 we worked on story problems with venn diagrams where we had to use the information given in the story problem and put it into a venn diagram.

The tricky part about this was the people in the story problem voted on their favorite activities and some voted more  than once and some did not vote for any of the activities. Most people figured it out but others including me had trouble getting the numbes to add up to the total number of people who voted.

example

350 people were surveyed on which winter sport activity they liked, ski, snowboard, or ice skate.
below are the results they came up with

154 like to snowboard
178 like to ski
57 like to ice skate
2  snowboard and ice skate
49 ski and snowboard
15 ski and ice skate
2 like all three

from this information we set up a venn diagram of three intercepting circles with each one being either ski, snowboard, or ice skate. from there we started with the intercepting parts becuase it would make things less complicated, so 2 people liked all three so we put that number in the middle of all three circles. 15 liked ski and ice skate and what we did with the 15 was subtract it with 2 becuase we already knew 2 people liked to do those two activities including snowboard. We also subtracted 2 from the 49 who liked to ski and snowboard and the 2 who liked to snowboard and ice skate. from there we started adding the number of people who liked only one activitiy. we had to subtract the ski, snowboard and ice skate from the middle numbers in the circles becuase they were already accounted for. Lastly we added up the total and subtracted that from the final total we should have to get 25 people who like neither one of the activities.

From this activity we did another one like it that was a little easier to do becuase we had went through this one to better understand what we were doing.

Week 2

During week two I learned about venn diagrams and how to use them and understand how to read the information on them.

venn diagrams are intersecting circles that differentiate and group differant things together. A simple venn diagram is two intersecting circles with the middle of the two circles being the area where the objects are related to eachother.

What I also learned was the abbreviations that are used to understand the venn diagrams.

CnP-intersection
Cnp with a line under the n-everything except intersection
AUB-compliment of the union

Week 1

This week we learned new techniques when it came to solving mathmatical problems.
What I had trouble with when it came to solving a problem was that I kept using the traditional way of solving it.

For example,
66-29
when I looked at this problem and started solving it I automatically used the tradional technique and solved it by borrowing from 1 from 66 in order to make the last 6 in sixty-six a 16 which was bigger than the 9 in 29. I was always taught this way so when I saw other methods being used to solve and get the right answer I was pretty amazed!

My favorite method of all was the number line becuase it was easier and it was a really creative and intresting way of solving the problem.
