So during week 4 what we did was learn all the differant ways to solve addition and subtraction problems. Growing up all I knew how to do was the traditional way of solving problems, so when we were asked to solve the problems in a differant way I struggled becuase my mind was set on only solving them the traditional way. After the second problem though I started to get a hang of using other methods to solve a problem.
Below I will explain some of the differant methods I learned
Problem #1 34+28
Give and take
34+28=
30+32+62
What you do above is take 2 away and add them to 28 in order to make it into a happy solid number and the 34 then becomes a 32. Then you add both 30 and 32 to get 62.
Partial sums
34
+28
_____
50=3+4
12=2+8
_______
62
Partial sums is the method where you break up the tens colomn and the one colomn and you add the tens first, so 3 would be 30 and 4 would be 40 to give you 50. Then you add the ones which are 8 and 2 which give you 12. Finally you add the 50 and 12 to get 62 your final answer.
Finally above is a video explaining the partial differances method which is used to solve three digit problems. This is one of the other methods that I learned during class to solve subtraction problems.

I was taught the traditional way of adding and subtracting too, making it hard to switch gears during this class. I used give and take and partial sums but the partial difference subtraction method really confused me until I saw this video. Thanks for the explanation!
ReplyDeleteI also had a hard time solving addition problems various ways. I was truly stuck on the traditional way! Out of the two examples you gave, I thought the easiest way for me was partial sums. To visually see and add the friendly numbers first (tens), then the more complicated numbers (ones) made this method easy.

I can definitely relate to the frustration you felt when trying to solve the addition and subtraction problems in a way that was not the traditional method. I also was only taught the traditional method and it's hard trying to think about solving a problem in a new way.

I definitely agree with you, we were always taught that the traditional method is the only way to go and never shown any other ways to solve addition. It is hard to change your mindset or solve addition in many different ways when you have only done addition one way. I like the video that you provided at the end, it was really helpful.
